Data Loss Prevention: Two Ways to Protect Your Organisation from Data Loss

23 February 2014 · by R & G Technologies

In today’s competitive economy, you can’t afford the financial costs of downtime or the cost to your image.

Your organisation relies on certain information and procedures to run smoothly. Lost or irretrievable data means resounding disruptions are felt across different departments of your organisation.

Protect your organisation from data loss with backups and anti-malware protection...

1. Backups

Copying and archiving your data to another or multiple locations ensures you can restore it should the need ever arise.

Backups reduce the risk of data loss. If a natural disaster happens, or your computer system gets hit by a virus, it’s likely that you’ll experience data loss. To reduce the risk of that happening, backups make a copy of the state of that server in a previous time. Backups are configured to run daily or even hourly to maintain that state. In that sense, you can always roll back to a previous state.

The important thing about choosing backup solutions is choosing the right one based on your organisational requirements. There are local and remote backup solutions that each have pros as well as cons. To see which is best for your organisation, talk to your in-house IT staff or outside vendors and evaluate options.

2. Anti-malware Protection

Malware is the umbrella term for all malicious software such as trojans, worms and viruses that disrupt your computer’s normal operation and steal information. Installing anti-malware ensures you’re aware of potentially malicious software before it wriggles its way into your computer.

“When trojans, viruses and spyware manage to enter your network, they can disrupt the normal operation of your network, cause major outages, and impact your bottom line. They will affect your ability to work, and ultimately cost you time and money” - Bentzen.

To reduce the risk of data loss and data theft, equip your organisation with anti-malware. Always research anti-virus software before you download it, and consult with an IT expert before deciding what anti-malware is best for you.

Use Backups and Anti-malware to prevent data loss

Your organisation relies on certain information and procedures to run smoothly. Aside from the loss of intellectual property, you can also lose years of work in procedures, processes and business planning. For all my scaremongering, it’s not difficult to ensure that your data is secure and safely tucked away in case of disaster.

There are a wide variety of solutions available that are designed to minimise the risks to your data. With the assistance of your resident IT professional or external service, you can set up a customised firewall, encryption, backups and anti-malware protection to ensure you never experience the pains of data theft and loss.
